OUR STORY
From a school hall to our very own headquarters
The 103rd Oxford Road Scout Group was founded around 11 years ago to bring Scouting to West Reading — one of the most beautifully diverse communities in the town, with members and families from Sri Lanka, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Spain, Barbados, Russia, Nepal, and beyond.
We started life in Oxford Road Primary School. Reading Borough Council then offered us the old bowling pavilion in Kensington Road Recreation Ground — and we jumped at it. But as we grew to five sections — Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and Explorers — we well and truly outgrew the building. It was too small, in need of serious work, and not fit for purpose.
In 2018 we committed to building something new and brilliant. Planning permission was granted, building regs approved, and a 30-year lease secured with Reading Borough Council. Fundraising began, and we’ve been building steadily ever since — powered by grants, donated materials, and the remarkable generosity of our community.

How far we’ve come
FUNDED BY OUR COMMUNITY
Look what we’ve achieved together
Every pound of the £153,000 raised so far has come from grants, community fundraising, donated materials, and people just like you.
On top of these cash donations, we’ve had donated fire doors, plasterboard, kitchen fittings, concrete blocks, timber, worktops, and paint — plus hundreds of hours of volunteer labour. It genuinely takes a village.
Help us finish our new Scout HQ
We still need £147,000 to complete insulation, electrics, plumbing, flooring, kitchen and toilet facilities for local young people.
